Munich

18th April

We caught a Blabla car to Munich. It was fun going down the autobahn apart from the roadworks. Also just a short way from our destination we came to a complete halt. We sat there for about half an hour. Some police cars came at one point. However when we started to move again there was no evidence of what caused the traffic jam. Due to the driver not having the right sticker for the inner city he dropped us at a car park on the ring road.

We hopped in the lift and found ourselves in BMW Welt. They had free WiFi so we used it to get directions to our accommodation.

On the way we sat down to kill time. When we arrived we didn't know which button to push for the apartment. As we were early we decided to wait as our host said he'd be home around 5pm and it was only 4:30.

Eventually someone came to the door and we asked them if they knew our host. He indicated which button to push and we were in! Lucky we asked as our host had already been home awhile. Must've arrived just before us.

As it was 5pm we decided not to go out and explore. Instead we went to the local supermarket. It was a discount one and after Switzerland it was a relief to see affordable food!

Jay cooked dinner for everyone as our host had to go out for a few hours. After a late dinner and a chat with both Sohrab and Anna we went to sleep.

19th April

We had no plans for the day so we headed off in the direction of the town centre. Along the way we came across Odeonsplatz, Feldherrnhalle and the Theatine Church.

Quite pleased with our find we carried on. We found the Residenz Theater.

Despite our luck we thought we'd better find the information centre to get a map and an idea of what else we could do.

The information centre was located at Marienplatz. In the same square was the New Town Hall. This featured the Rathaus-Glockenspiel - a clock with moving parts and bells.

We watched the 15 minute show hoping that it would improve but knowing that it wouldn't. It's pretty cool but just for 2 minutes!

Next we saw  St Peter's Church.

Then right next door was the famous Viktualien Market. Unfortunately we weren't hungry but there was lots of delicious smelling food. I really enjoyed it.

We then walked to the cathedral (Frauenkirche). It was quite plain inside though it did have stained glass windows.

Next we went for a longer walk to Konigsplatz (King's Square). On the way we stopped to buy lunch at a supermarket.

Konigsplatz was very Roman. There was a Roman museum there that looked good but we didn't go in.

Next we tackled the walk to the English Gardens admiring the museum buildings from the outside. We walked past the Haus der kunst, Bayerisches National Museum and quite a few art museums.

Karlstor (Karl's Gate)

I really wanted to see the surfers in the gardens. It was very unique seeing people surfing in a river.

Next we had a look at the Angel of Peace monument because it was nearby. There was another interesting structure close by but we didn't have the energy for that too!

Once in the gardens we ate some strawberries and raspberries that we had bought on the way and then watched some other surfers further down the river.

Next we went to the Monopteros. It had a lovely view of the park and I could hear a windband playing.

After we walked down the hill I realised that I'd lost my hat (it was the first day I had worn it on the trip too!). I returned and it wasn't there. We backtracked to the fruit shop passing by the bench where we'd stopped to eat.

As it wasn't at the shop we walked back to the park towards the Chinese Tower. There, sitting next to the bench was my hat! We hadn't seen it the first time because a couple was sitting there.

We quickly saw the Chinese Tower and then made our way out of the park. By now we were both very tired.

However, Jay said that the Walking Man statue was nearby so we took a short detour there before going home.

Once home we had a quick rest before walking to the supermarket to buy ingredients for dinner. We then had a long chat with Anna before calling it a day.

20th April

The first activity of the day was to go and see Scholb Nymphenburg Palace. We took the underground and then a tram to get there.

We decided not to go in as Jay thought it didn't look "palacey" enough and we'd already seen a few palaces on our trip so I wasn't keen either.

We spent an hour wandering around the palace gardens though. It was very quiet and pretty.

I decided to see the chariot museum though because it was different. Jay opted out and waited for me. It turned out to be pretty average but if I hadn't gone I wouldn't have known. It had lots of carriages as well as royal sleighs.

Next we took the bus and underground to Olympiapark. We found a shady spot under a tree to have a picnic lunch of chicken sandwiches. We walked around the park for awhile but it was too hot to be enjoyable. So we headed to BMW Welt as we'd not looked at it when we arrived.

A blimp? Unexpected sighting in the sky

After that there wasn't anything else that we wanted to do as we'd completed it the day before. We had planned to go to the science museum but afther reading some reviews we decided not to because many people complained that there was limited English and it was outdated.

Had to stop for some blackforest cake

We rested at home and then we went out to  Turkish/Greek restaurant for dinner with Anna. Jay had chicken breast with rice and salad and I had lamb with bread and sauce.

After dinner we went to the river because Anna's work friend was having beers there to celebrate his birthday. Jay and I bought some ice tea as we're not fans of beer.

On the way home Anna got us lost. She hopped on the wrong subway train and we followed as she was the local. When she realised her mistake we hopped off... Well Anna and Jay did but the doors started to close and I didn't make it.

I rode to the next station and waited for the next train back. Because it was late they only went every 10 minutes.

Jay was so happy to see me as he was really worried. I didn't have anything on me, no money, phone or train ticket. I said at least no one could mug me!!

We finally arrived home at 11pm. Sohrab was back from his work trip so we had a brief chat before going to bed. It was a late night.
